The Great Lakes have the most shipwrecks per square mile among all bodies of water in the world, largely due to the high shipping traffic in the 19th century and the lake’s volatile weather. Researchers know about the wrecks because reporting any commercial ship that sails on the lakes is required; from the early 19th century to the 20th century, about 40,000 ships sailed the Great Lakes, Baillod said.

There are about 6,000 commercial vessels on the seabed of the Great Lakes, lost to storms or other issues. In Lake Michigan alone, there are over 200 shipwrecks waiting to be discovered, according to Baillod, who has created a database of these ships over the past three decades.

Wrecks in the Great Lakes have been found since the 1960s, but in recent years the rate of these finds has accelerated greatly, in part due to media attention, clearer waters and better technology, Baillod said. Some wreck hunters and media outlets call this the golden age for shipwreck discoveries.

“There’s a lot more shipwreck awareness now on the Great Lakes, and people are looking down in the water at what’s on the bottom,” he added. Part of the reason it’s easier to see in the water is thanks to quagga mussels — an invasive species that was introduced in the 1990s. The mollusks have filtered most of the lakes, turning them from their old greenish hue, which allowed for only a few feet of visibility, to clear blue. Now, the lakes have visibility of up to 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30.5 meters), Baillod explained.

“Tourism has popped up around paddle boarding and kayaking, and these shipwrecks are visible from the surface because the water is so clear,” he added.

And then there are advancements in technology. “Side-scan sonar used to cost $100,000 back in 1980,” he said. “The one we used to find this (shipwreck) was just over $10,000. They’ve really come down in price.”

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has a project in the works to map the bottom of the Great Lakes in high resolution by 2030. If the organization succeeds, all shipwrecks will be found, Baillod said.

In the meantime, Baillod said he hopes he and his team will continue to discover missing shipwrecks from his database in the coming years and bring along citizen scientists for the ride: “I keep looking, and I don’t doubt that we’ll keep finding.”

Earlier this year, a team of researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association and Wisconsin Historical Society located the shipwreck off the coastal town of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, the association announced on Sunday.

Named the F.J. King, the ship had become a legend within the Wisconsin wreck hunter community for its elusive nature, said maritime historian Brendon Baillod, principal investigator and project lead of the discovery.

“We really wanted to solve this mystery, and we didn’t expect to,” Baillod told CNN. “(The ship) seemed to have just vanished into thin air. … I actually couldn’t believe we found it.”

The wreck is just one of many that have been found in the Great Lakes in recent years, and there are still hundreds left to be recovered in Lake Michigan alone, according to Baillod.

Built in 1867, the F.J. King plied the waters of the Great Lakes for the purpose of trans-lake commerce. The ship transported grains during a time when Wisconsin served as the breadbasket of the United States. The 144-foot-long (44-meter) vessel also carried cargo including iron ore, lumber and more.

The ship had a lucrative 19-year career until that September night when a gale-force wind caused its seams to break apart, according to the announcement. The captain, William Griffin, ordered the crew to evacuate on the ship’s yawl boat, from where they watched the F.J. King sink, bow first.

О возможной подоплеке происходящего и о шагах, которые предпринимает кооператив, г-н Василенко рассказал в интервью «МК». - Роман Викторович, как так получилось, что на восьмом году работы кооператива к нему возникли претензии со стороны Центрального банка РФ? - У нас у самих нет ответа на этот вопрос – это загадка. Что такого случилось в конце 2021 года, что деятельность кооператива вызвала нарекания? Мы работали в 2021 году ровно также, как работали в предыдущие семь лет. В 2019 году Банк России в ответ на запрос одной из экспертных организаций прислал письмо о том, что «Бест Вей» не входит в поднадзорную ему сферу и у него к кооперативу нет вопросов. А 17 ноября 2021 года ЦБ вдруг внес кооператив в Список компаний с выявленными признаками нелегальной деятельности на финансовом рынке. Этому не предшествовали ни проверка кооператива, ни затребование документов – ничего. Не обнародовано какого-то свода правил ЦБ для невключения в этот список – мол, если вы не будете эти правила соблюдать, мы вас включим в список. - Но на сайте ЦБ опубликован перечень признаков так называемой финансовой пирамиды. - Да, и ни один из пунктов этого перечня не соответствует нашей деятельности: мы не предлагаем пайщикам сверхдоходность, наши вновь пришедшие пайщики не обеспечивают доходность тех пайщиков, кто пришел до них и т.д. - ЦБ, наверное, хотел подчеркнуть, что кооператив аффилирован с вашим холдингом «Лайф-из-Гуд»? - Возможно, но кооператив с холдингом не аффилирован. «Лайф-из-Гуд» -- многопрофильный холдинг, занимающийся прежде всего бизнес-образованием, ивентами, книгами, учебными фильмами и т.д. Это совсем другое направление. Кооператив не является частью каких-либо холдингов или групп компаний. Он абсолютно самостоятелен. Как таковой деятельностью кооператива руководит правление, в которое я не вхожу. Я председатель Совета кооператива – коллективного органа, занимающегося защитой прав и интересов пайщиков, подотчетному общему собранию пайщиков. Совет определяет идеологию развития кооператива, правление – руководит текущей деятельностью. Ревизионная комиссия из числа самих пайщиков контролирует соблюдение устава, финансовую и хозяйственную деятельность. Кроме того, периодически правление привлекает крупные аудиторские компании для проверки его деятельности внешними профессиональными финансистами. Кооператив – некоммерческая организация: добровольное объединение граждан и юридических лиц, созданная для удовлетворения коллективным способом потребностей каждого её участника, по сути, это касса взаимопомощи, где люди объединившись помогают друг другу. Это хорошо видно, например, в сложившейся ситуации, когда десятки пайщиков защищают кооператив по своей собственной инициативе. Более 30 тыс. пайщиков, членов их семей, сочувствующих подписали две путиции в защиту кооператива, размещенные на change.org. Я задумывал «Бест Вей» в 2014 году как классический кооператив, добровольное объединение граждан и юридических лиц, созданное на основе членства путем объединения его членами имущественных паевых взносов в целях удовлетворения потребностей его членов в покупке желаемых объектов -- будь то недвижимость или автомобиль, и предоставляющее средства в рассрочку, а не в кредит. Ведь суть кооператива – взаимопомощь между пайщиками, последовательная помощь каждому пайщику со стороны всех остальных пайщиков. В нашем кооперативе пайщик вносит часть суммы за заявленный самим пайщиком объект, остальную часть предоставляет в рассрочку паевой фонд кооператива, который пополняется всеми пайщиками. Такая схема работы основана и на российском дореволюционном, и на советском, и на международном опыте.   Разумеется, некоммерческий подход обусловливает сравнительно мягкие финансовые условия. Хотя у кооперативов есть свои особенности – например, для приобретения желаемого объекта нужно отстоять в очереди. У кооператива сейчас более 19 тыс. пайщиков, он приобрел для пайщиков более 2500 объектов. в 2021 году мы приобретали для пайщиков в среднем по две-три квартиры в день включая выходные и праздничные дни. Почти 250 объектов уже перешли в собственность пайщиков. - И тут происходит включение в список ЦБ… - Центробанк кратко называет его предупредительный список: само по себе включение в этот список носит информационный характер. Но последствия не заставили себя ждать: вдруг в середине декабря происходит блокировка Роскомнадзором нескольких страниц официального сайта и сайта целиком. Центральный банк сам сообщил в СМИ, что обратился в Генеральную прокуратуру с предложением заблокировать наш официальный сайт как инструмент привлечения новых пайщиков, а Генпрокуратура дала соответствующее предписание Роскомнадзору. Причем, как я сказал, был заблокирован весь сайт целиком, а не отдельные страницы, на которых рассказывалось об условиях вступления в кооператив – заблокированы были, например, личные кабинеты пайщиков, в которых фиксируется движение очереди и происходят расчеты с кооперативом, что не может не сказаться на интересах как кооператива, так и отдельных его пайщиков. В кооперативе, как я сказал, более 19 тыс. пайщиков со всей России, если считать с членами семей, «санкции» коснулись более 75 тыс. граждан России. В интересах ли граждан России «санкции» – вопрос, по-моему, риторический. Мы обратились в суд: в начале февраля состоятся сразу два инициированных нами разбирательства в Арбитражном суде города Москвы – по месту нахождения ЦБ. Отдельно подчеркну: у нас нет никакого самомнения, что мы знаем законы лучше государственных органов. Если есть нормативные акты, методики официально изданные – мы их неукоснительно соблюдаем: наш кооператив уделяет огромное внимание юридическим аспектам деятельности. Но в данном случае речь идет о том, что нас обвиняют в нарушении неких правил – причем эти обвинения приводят к явным негативным последствиям. И никаких объяснений своих действий ЦБ не предоставляет. Я видел в СМИ комментарии некоторых чиновников: описание ими нашей деятельности даже отдаленно не напоминает ни положения устава кооператива, ни практику нашей работы. - А что за история с уголовным делом по признакам «финансовой пирамиды»? - Знаю не больше вашего. Есть только пресс-релиз о том, что дело расследуется по настоянию Генеральной прокуратуры. Мы не знаем ни кем оно возбуждено, ни по каким обстоятельствам: что инкриминируется, что изучается следствием? То есть не знаем ничего вообще – при этом объявлено, что дело существует и оно расследуется.       За вторую половину ноября и декабрь 2021 года у нас сократился приток новых пайщиков. Но при этом увеличилось число пайщиков, полностью погасивших свой пай и переоформивших недвижимость из собственности кооператива в свою собственность – это происходит на основании выдаваемой правлением справки о полной выплате пая. - Если пайщики начнут отказываться от участия в кооперативе, чем это чревато? - Ничем. Мы готовы вернуть каждому пайщику паевые средства в любой момент – это закреплено в уставе кооператива.   Гарантией для возврата пайщику, которому уже приобретена недвижимость, служит ликвидный объект недвижимости. В случае выхода данного пайщика он может быть либо предложен другому пайщику, либо реализован на открытом рынке, а средства от его продажи пополнят паевой фонд кооператива. Именно поэтому кооператив приобретает объекты недвижимости для пайщиков на вторичном рынке и в обязательном порядке проводит юридическую проверку и независимую оценку. Таким образом, финансовая модель кооператива чрезвычайно надежна, безопасна как для пайщика, так и для кооператива. - С чем, на ваш взгляд, связаны действия ЦБ против кооператива? - Моя гипотеза состоит в том, что профильный департамент ЦБ блокирует деятельность крупных организаций, не подлежащих лицензированию Банка России – чтобы стимулировать другие организации выбирать формы работы, подлежащие лицензированию, чтобы другие потребительские кооперативы пересмотрели организационно-правовую форму своей работы. Но проблема в том, что действиями ЦБ поставлена под сомнение достаточность Закона о потребительской кооперации для функционирования потребительских кооперативов в правовом поле, поставлены под сомнение сотни зарегистрированных в установленном порядке уставов потребительских кооперативов. И право граждан самим выбирать, каким способом приобретать недвижимость. С этими действиями мы намерены бороться.
